Birthday festivities for seriously pampered pooch turn in a big celebration of
all things canine.
CARROLLTON So you think you're a serious dog lover, huh?
Would you threat your dog to a birthday party? Have your dog's paw read by a psychic?
Send your dog to camp?
Those are the kind of dog lovers who come to Pam Kaplan's house in Carrollton each March
to celebrate the birthday of Zamora, a gray short-haired, floppy-eared Weimaraner.
"I don't have children. This is my child," Ms. Kaplan said happily Sunday as more
than 40 dogs, watched by their owners, chased each other's tails, sniffed and otherwise
used a read plastic fire hydrant, and occasionally snarled at each other in her fenced-in,
half-acre back yard.
The dog of honor is 14 years old, blind and moves slower than she used to (but not so slow
Sunday to miss trying to nab a chicken sandwich off a tabletop). But to Ms. Kaplan's
closest friends and their dogs, Zamora's birthday provides a good excuse as any to be party animals.
... This year, psychic Susan Henson was drafted to "paw read" under a flopping
outdoor tent. ...Animals put out psychic energy just like people do, Ms. Henson said.
"I think they very much have their own thoughts and feelings," she said.
For many guests, the birthday party is just one dog-centered event in a rough world. ...
